What is the H.O.P.E. Toledo Foundation?

H.O.P.E stands for "Helping Our Population Educate".  It's a multifaceted approach to creating a more educated, more hopeful, more impact-oriented Toledo with a plan that caters to the future of Toledo: our youth at Toledo Jesup W. Scott High School and their families.

THE PLATFORM:

Any graduating senior class student from Toledo Jesup W. Scott High School (Scott) who at a minimum was enrolled in classes as a senior at Scott on January 6, 2020, and who graduates before August 15, 2020, AND who gets accepted into any accredited Ohio public college, university or trade school, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) or Lourdes University (LU) will receive post-secondary education for free, inclusive of Pell grants.

FREE means that tuition, room & board, books, and fees will all be covered between Pell grants and private funders. Extraneous expenses such as transportation, clothing, bedding and anything else will not be covered under H.O.P.E. Toledo (H.O.P.E.).

ADDITIONALLY, and importantly, for every senior who graduates from Scott in 2020 (before August 15, 2020), ONE of their parents (or a legal guardian) will also be eligible to attend a local public college, university or trade school for free. For the parents/legal guardians, this funding is only pertinent to an undergraduate degree or trade school certification, not advanced degrees.

The private funder will fund for a total of 4.5 years starting August15, 2020. This allows for a transfer or one semester off as we understand that things come up at times. Any schooling after 4.5 years from 9/1/2020 will not be funded by H.O.P.E.

THE PARAMETERS:

STUDENTS:

  • For eligibility, the student must be a senior classman and graduate in 2020 and before August 15, 2020, from Scott and must have been enrolled at Scott on January 6, 2020.

  • There are no restrictions or criteria around GPA, attendance or other threshold performance requirements other than graduating and being accepted into post-secondary education.

  • In order to be eligible a student MUST have fully completed his/her FAFSA forms in a timely manner. H.O.P.E., Scott and Toledo Public Schools (TPS) will offer assistance in this process.

  • H.O.P.E. can guarantee funding only for Ohio accredited public schools, universities, trade schools, EMU and LU. The program applauds individuals who seek to go elsewhere outside of Ohio public schools (and EMU/LU) and who get accepted, however, they will not be eligible for these funds.

  • By the end of each school year (before June 15th of each calendar year) you must submit to H.O.P.E. Toledo a one to two-page essay detailing:

    • Your least favorite class and why

    • The ways in which you could improve your performance in the upcoming school year

    • Your biggest regret from the last school year

    • Your three (3) primary goals for the upcoming school year

    • Your favorite class and why

PARENTS/LEGAL GUARDIAN:

  • ONE parent or legal guardian will be eligible for H.O.P.E. funding once their student graduates from Scott (by 8/15/2020) and is accepted into qualifying post-secondary education.

  • HOPE has no say in which parent/legal guardian will receive the funding, nor will it participate in or accept responsibility for any disputes over which parent/legal guardian will receive the funding. To the extent differences cannot be resolved by the family, and one individual cannot be selected, H.O.P.E. will not fund any parent/legal guardian.

  • The parent/legal guardian must provide the appropriate paperwork to prove their relationship with the child. An individual who is not a parent or legal guardian will not be considered eligible for the H.O.P.E. funds.

  • For eligibility, the parent/legal guardian must have a senior student who graduates from Scott in 2020 and before August 15, 2020, and who was enrolled at Scott on January 6, 2020.

  • There are no restrictions or criteria around past GPA or educational pedigree, criminal history or other threshold performance requirements other than your child graduating from Scott and being accepted into post-secondary education.

  • In order to be eligible, a parent/legal guardian MUST have fully completed his/her FAFSA forms in a timely manner. H.O.P.E. and TPS will offer assistance in this process.

  • For the parent/legal guardian, H.O.P.E. can guarantee funding only for local, accredited public schools, universities and trade schools, and LU. For the purpose of defining “local,” it is any institution with 45 miles of Scott. The program applauds individuals who seek to go elsewhere outside of the local Toledo region, and who get accepted, however, they will not be eligible for these funds.

"If hopelessness is the inverse of justice, then HOPE is the beginning of opportunity and endless possibility."
