Navigating the FAFSA and Scholarship Applications Journey

By: Shawna Woody, HOPE Toledo Vice President of Operations

Navigating the world of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and college scholarship applications is an overwhelming journey, especially for first-generation college students.

HOPE Toledo is here to help. We provide one-on-one service in collaboration with some great partners at Toledo Tomorrow, Greater Toledo Community Foundation and Toledo Public Schools to guide you along your financial journey to postsecondary education. We also work with Owens Trio EOC and UT Rocket Solution Central, both of whom help our scholars with FAFSA.

What is FAFSA and why do I need to complete it?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. Completed before each year of college, the FAFSA allows students to apply for federal grants like the Pell grant and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG), work-study, and loans. Colleges use FAFSA data to determine federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges also use FAFSA data to award their own aid as well.

How do I find college scholarship applications and what do I need to know to complete them?

You really have to be intentional and dedicated in your search for college scholarship applications. The more time and effort you put into your search, the more scholarships for which you can apply. Hopefully, the more scholarships you apply for, the greater your chances are to receive more money.

  • High school guidance counselors have a wealth of information when it comes to scholarships. By your senior year, you should have formed a relationship with them; if you still need to, get to it! Counselors know what scholarships are offered and which ones you should apply for. Many of them will also give you those extra “due date” reminders.

  • Check the website of the college or university you’re going to attend.

  • Local Black Greek organizations celebrate and support our youth annually by awarding hundreds and thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors.

  • Let the internet be your friend and search “college scholarships” for sites that compile scholarship opportunities.

  • Local organizations, non-profits, churches, and social groups are also great places to find scholarships. While using the internet is helpful, at the local level, it may be more beneficial to “ask around,” call, or visit these places to inquire, in person, about applications.

Even if you don’t have all the requirements or qualifications outlined in the scholarship, Apply For Them ALL! Don’t assume that there are always thousands of applicants for a particular scholarship. Sometimes you could be the only applicant. You never know unless you try.

What are the most frequently asked questions?

  • Do I have to fill out the FAFSA every year? Yes, you do. Completing the FAFSA enables you to remain eligible to receive financial aid.

  • Do I have to pay back grants? No, you do not.
