How Do I Act When Someone Does Something I Don’t Like?

Conscious Discipline Builds Positive Relationships in HOPE Toledo Pre-K Partner Provider Classrooms

By: Nancy Okuley, HOPE Toledo Professional Development Support Specialist

As the HOPE Toledo professional development support specialist, I have the privilege of working with all of the teachers in HOPE Toledo Pre-K’s provider program. As part of high-quality early childhood programming, professional development is key. I believe that we are all learners for life.

Early on, we collectively decided to learn about Conscious Discipline and how to best incorporate it into our HOPE Toledo programming Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based learning program focused on building positive relationships and social-emotional growth.

Conscious Discipline starts with the adult. In this case, the HOPE Toledo Pre-K Provider teachers participate in monthly Zoom meetings to discuss and learn about conscious discipline. Classroom observations are an integral component to help reflect on real-life situations and build new activities to meet the needs of each learning environment.

Conscious Discipline starts with understanding your own reactions and learning key self-regulation techniques that help yield positive relationships with others.

When teachers are well-regulated and have a great toolbox of positive strategies, they are able to best guide children on their journeys of self-regulation and positivity.

Stay tuned as we discuss more about Conscious Discipline and how it can positively impact our HOPE Toledo Pre-K Provider classrooms, our community… and our world!
