HOPE Toledo Scholars Reflect on the First Semester of College

By: Autumn Parker, Community and Family Navigator for HOPE Toledo

Most people agree that the first semester of college can be very exciting but it is a big transition with a lot of new things to learn and can be scary to many. As we reflect on the first semester of college, our HOPE Scholars have some keen observations and advice we’d like to share.

1. Ask for help before you need it.

Get to know what resources are available to you. Find mentors, advisors, and trusted adults. Explore the TRIO Programs. Get to know your financial aid office and visit your professors early in the semester. You don’t want to be a sinking ship. Use your newly found resources to help you through the semester before you feel overwhelmed.

2. You can do hard things.

We’ve had scholars here at HOPE Toledo who were sure school was not their thing, and they surprised themselves and completed their programs. It is possible for you to overcome and accomplish what you don’t think is possible. While it may appear things will not get easier, please know we are here to help you handle the hard things BETTER.

3. You don’t have to know what you want to do with the rest of your life.

At first, it feels like you have to know your life plan and have it all together, but in reality, most college students are still determining what avenues to pursue or even what is available to study. Take the opportunity to experiment and find out what is best for you.

4. Everyone struggles.

Every student is not the same. Every situation is different. Everyone struggles sometimes. That’s when you rely on those who are out for your best interests, channel what uplifts you, and reach out to the resources that are available to you.

5. It’s worth it.

Transformation happens with education. The opportunity is yours for the taking, and you’re not alone on this journey. Pursuing higher education is not for the faint of heart, but it will make a difference in your life and the lives of others.

At the end of the day, it’s important to find the right people to talk to and seek out the resources available to you. Everyone here at HOPE Toledo is rooting for you and everyone pursuing their goals.
